Description
Job DescriptionResponsible for disassembling returned customer engines and performing detailed failure analysis to determine root causes of issues. Duties include documenting component wear, identifying defects or damage, preparing detailed reports, and working closely with engineering and quality teams to support continuous improvement. Requires mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and familiarity with internal combustion engines. Successful candidate for this role will be a member of the Salary Bargaining Unit-Local 240.
Responsibilities
The primary responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:
- Test Cell Setup & Instrumentation: Install and instrument engines, transmissions, and other powertrains on test cells.
- Dynamometer Operation & Test Automation: Operate advanced dynamometer test equipment for functional, durability, and development testing, including building automated test schedules with safety and operating alarms.
- Powertrain Diagnostics & Parameter Adjustment: Utilize diagnostic tools to adjust and resolve powertrain parameters according to engineering specifications.
- Powertrain Dismantling & Inspection: Systematically dismantle and inspect engines, transmissions, and powertrains, performing visual and dimensional checks as per teardown analysis guides.
- Instrumentation Calibration: Calibrate instrumentation and measuring devices periodically.
- Test Cell Maintenance: Perform preventative maintenance on dynamometer test cell equipment.
- Experimental Powertrain Assembly: Build experimental/development engines, transmissions, and powertrains, including measurements and calculations (e.g., compression ratio).
- Engineering Collaboration: Interface with engineering disciplines regarding specifications, procedures, and tools.
- Continuous Learning & Versatility: Complete required training to support versatility.
- Advanced System Diagnosis & Root Cause Analysis: Diagnose engine, transmission, powertrain, and vehicle system issues using advanced tools, defining root causes and resolving problems in conjunction with engineers.
- Autonomous Work & Decision Making: Work with minimum supervision and make decisions based on critical assessment.
- Flexible Work Location/Schedule: Work shifts at different local Ford facilities, often with minimum notice.
- Workplace Safety & Housekeeping: Maintain a clean and safe work area through housekeeping tasks.
- Audit Support: Support regular safety and quality audits.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- College diploma in Automotive or related discipline.(Successful candidates will be required to provide proof of degree completion for the highest level of education attained. If the degree was obtained from a school outside of Canada, an Education Credential Assessment report showing Canadian equivalency is also required)
- Licensed Automotive Service Technician (Certificate 310S or 310T).
- Must be available to work in shifts (mornings/afternoons/evenings).
Preferred Requirements:
- 3-5 years of experience as a Mechanic Technician is preferred.
- Skilled in using measuring equipment and advanced diagnostic tools for the operation, dismantling, and reassembly of engines, transmissions, and other powertrains.
- Competent in the use of computers and associated software.
- Fluent in both written and oral English communication.
