Description
Job DescriptionAbout Ford...
Do you want to change the world? The Ford Motor Company had endured and thrived for 118 years - through every imaginable challenge - because we have the vision to imagine the future and the courage to change. Ford is redefining how it will build a better world for the future by creating a culture and opportunities where employees will capitalize on Ford's excellence in designing and building the most iconic products while also helping develop the future of world-class connected BEVs. Ford is transforming our global automotive business to scale EVs, strengthen operations, and unlock value. We will deliver the speed of a startup, with the deep expertise of high-volume production. This is the opportunity of a lifetime.
In this position...
Lead engineering for core electric powertrain and battery manufacturing processes through the industrialization of Ford's next generation electric vehicles. This critical role involves managing personnel, budgets, and timelines for all powertrain and battery manufacturing operations, and ensuring all processes adhere to Ford's stringent safety, quality, and regulatory standards, particularly those unique to high-voltage battery systems and electric powertrains. A key focus will be driving innovation, Lean, and continuous improvement in manufacturing techniques for advanced EV powertrain components and battery systems, and optimizing their integration and production.
Responsibilities
What you'll do...
- Team Leadership: Supervise, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of engineers across core EV powertrain and battery manufacturing processes. Foster a collaborative and productive work environment that drives innovation in EV powertrain and battery production.
- Project Management: Plan, coordinate, and execute complex engineering projects related to new EV powertrain and battery module/pack launches, manufacturing line retooling for EV powertrain/battery production, and the implementation of advanced manufacturing processes. Ensure timely delivery within scope and budget, allocating resources efficiently, and proactively managing project risks associated with new EV technologies and production ramp-up.
- Design for Manufacturing & Assembly (DFM/DFA): Oversee the development and optimization of EV powertrain components and battery modules/packs for manufacturability, performance, and efficiency, utilizing advanced simulation tools. Collaborate closely with product development and Manufacturing Engineering teams to ensure seamless integration of battery cells, modules, and packs, electric motors, power electronics, and thermal management systems during powertrain and battery manufacturing, ensuring efficient and high-quality production flow.
- Quality and Compliance (EV-Specific): Ensure all EV powertrain components and battery systems meet Ford's rigorous quality standards and comply with all industry regulations and safety requirements, including those specific to high-voltage battery systems, electric motor performance, power electronics reliability, and thermal management. Implement robust quality gates throughout manufacturing processes.
- Process Improvement & Automation: Implement lean manufacturing practices, Ford Production System (FPS) principles, and continuous improvement activities to optimize electric motor assembly, battery module and pack assembly, power electronics manufacturing, and associated testing processes for EVs. Drive automation initiatives, including advanced robotics for complex assembly tasks and material handling, to enhance efficiency, quality, and safety.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Act as a critical technical liaison between departments such as EV Product Development (specifically powertrain/battery), Manufacturing Engineering (Powertrain Operations), Plant Operations, Quality Assurance, Supply Chain, and external suppliers of EV powertrain components, battery cells, and advanced materials. Ensure seamless integration from design to production launch.
- Budgeting and Strategic Planning: Develop and manage department budgets for EV powertrain and battery manufacturing operations, plan for capital investments in new manufacturing equipment and technologies (e.g., cell-to-pack assembly, automated motor winding, power electronics testing, thermal management system integration), and create long-term strategies that align with Ford's electrification goals and production targets.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline - Mechanical, Automotive, Manufacturing, Materials, or Electrical engineering.
- Significant experience, often 7-10+ years' experience in the automotive industry, with a strong emphasis on high-volume manufacturing environments.
- 5 or more years of salary supervisory experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Engineering Management, Automotive Engineering, or a related field with a focus on manufacturing or EV technology.
- Prior leadership and project management experience, ideally with a focus on electric powertrain or battery manufacturing, or new EV component launches.
- Automotive engineering leadership experiences specifically in EV powertrain components (motors, inverters), battery system integration (cells, modules, packs), thermal management, Lean methodology, and digital manufacturing tools.
- Exceptional leadership and communication skills, with the ability to manage and motivate a diverse team of engineers and technicians working on complex EV manufacturing challenges.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities, particularly in diagnosing and resolving production issues related to new EV technologies and processes.
- Adaptability and resilience in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment characteristic of new product launches and EV manufacturing ramp-up.
- Excellent organizational and project management capabilities, with a proven track record of delivering complex manufacturing projects on time and within budget.
