At GSK, we have bold ambitions for patients, aiming to positively impact the health of 2.5 billion people by the end of the decade. Our R&D focuses on discovering and delivering vaccines and medicines, combining our understanding of the immune system with cutting-edge technology to transform people's lives. GSK fosters a culture ambitious for patients, accountable for impact, and committed to doing the right thing, making sure that we focus our efforts on accelerating significant assets that meet patients' needs and have the highest probability of success. By uniting science, technology, and talent, we are committed to getting ahead of disease together.
An exciting opportunity is available for a highly motivated, creative, and meticulous lab-based scientist with a track record in developing 3D in vitro cell and tissue models. Specifically, the successful candidate will be responsible for developing, qualifying, and validating 3D in vitro cell and tissue models and related assays to support our drug discovery pipeline for neurodegenerative diseases.
The candidate will join the Translational Models group within our Human Biology department in GSK's Research Technologies organization at the Upper Providence site in the United States. The translational model teams' mission is to improve predictive and translational value of preclinical 3D cell and tissue models for identification of new targets, mechanism of action, efficacy, safety and metabolism. We aim to ultimately use these systems to refine, reduce, and replace animal models. Our group engages in dynamic, matrixed collaborative projects across therapeutic areas working closely with research units and technology platform groups.
Key Responsibilities:
In this role you will
- Develop, optimize and apply advanced in vitro 3D cell and tissue models for mechanistic understanding and early profiling of drug candidates for neurodegenerative diseases.
- Design and implement phenotypic assays for in vitro modelling of brain vascular-tissue-immune interactions.
- Collaborate and support routine work in a matrix team and cross-functional environment to ensure optimal delivery of project and department objectives to the highest possible scientific standard.
- Write protocols, design and execute laboratory experiments, apply advanced data analysis, interpret data, compile reports, and communicate findings with an emphasis on providing appropriate context to progress projects and/or develop platforms.
Basic Qualifications:
- PhD with -3+ years of post-doc and/or-job related experience, MS with 6+ years of experience, or BS with 9+ years of experience in Biomedical Engineering, Neuroscience, or related fields.
- Experience in designing and performing deep characterization of in vitro models using functional assays.
- Prior work experience in development of micro-physiological systems and bioprinting approaches for neuroscience applications.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Deep knowledge on cell signaling and extracellular matrix relevant to neurodegenerative diseases.
- Demonstrated proficiency in developing 3D co-cultured models and integrating novel technologies such as electrical, mechanical, optical and magnetic based modalities for real-time readouts.
- Experience with in vitro data analysis including imaging and multi-omics profiling for translational relevance.
- Fast learner with ability for multitasking and adapt rapidly to manage changing priorities and timelines.
