Company Overview
The City of San Diego Engineering & Capital Projects Department's goal is to provide engineering services including technical and operational support, design, and construction for the Capital Improvements Program (CIP), and oversight of the development of public infrastructure and facilities in an expeditious, cost-effective manner while maintaining the highest degree of quality.
The Engineering & Capital Projects Department is comprised of the following Divisions:
Architectural Engineering & Parks Division
Business Operations & Fiscal Services Division
Program & Project Development Division
Construction Management & Field Engineering Division
Transportation and Utilities Engineering Division
The Engineering & Capital Projects Department provides a full range of engineering services that support the City's CIP, including:
Rehabilitating, restoring, improving, and adding to the City's capital facilities;
Project and construction management of public improvement projects through the planning, design, and construction phase;
Quality control and inspection of private work permitted in the right-of-way;
Surveying and materials testing;
Site grading and subdivision improvements;
Infrastructure asset management;
CIP prioritization;
Engineer functions for all City departments; and
Procurement and management of CIP construction and associated professional consulting services contracts.
The Department works on a wide range of projects. Among those are:
Libraries
Fire, lifeguard, and police stations
Parks and recreation centers
Lighting and traffic signals
Street improvements
Bikeways and other transportation projects
Storm drainage and flood control facilities
Water and sewer pipelines
Water and wastewater treatment plants and pump stations
Utilities undergrounding projects
Benefits
City of San Diego employees may be eligible to participate in a benefits program including holidays, vacations, savings, and retirement plans, health programs, and other benefits. The City of San Diego has a Flexible Benefits Plan (IRS Section 125 Cafeteria plan) which provides employees with the opportunity to obtain certain benefits, such as healthcare insurance, on a pre-tax basis. Employees also receive FBP credits to help offset the cost of these benefits.
Eligible City employees initially hired or assuming office on or after July 10, 2021, will participate in the City’s Defined Benefit Plan administered by the San Diego City Employees’ Retirement System (SDCERS).
The City also has different salary-enhancement programs for Engineering employees based on professional credentials and licensing.
