Established in 1971, GEOCON is a dynamic Geotechnical Engineering, Environmental Services, Engineering Geology, and Construction Inspection firm with 9 offices throughout Northern and Southern California. GEOCON is ranked on ENR’s TOP 500 Design Firms year after year. We work on a wide variety of projects ranging from new and innovative school campuses to major transportation projects which help maintain infrastructure and alleviate traffic congestion in California.
Company History
Geocon is a California corporation established in 1971 as a professional engineering consulting firm providing comprehensive geotechnical engineering, geotechnical instrumentation, environmental consulting, engineering geology, geotechnical instrumentation, and construction inspections, including materials testing and special inspections. In addition to these services, we also provide environmental remediation contracting (cleanup) services and operate soils and materials testing laboratories.
We have 9 regional offices across the state with over 285 technically strong, highly motivated engineers, geologists, environmental scientists, technicians, and special inspectors. Geocon currently operates offices in San Diego, Irvine, Burbank, Murrieta, La Quinta, Redlands, Livermore, Fairfield, and Rancho Cordova. Each office is supported by state-of-the-art inventories of field equipment and instrumentation, comprehensive technical libraries, and modern data-management systems. Laboratory testing services are performed in in-house soils and materials testing laboratory accredited by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), State of California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), Cement and Concrete Reference Laboratory (CCRL), and the Division of State Architect (DSA).
Notable Accomplishments / Recognition
Geocon is leading the way in the conversion of California’s energy toward renewable sources. Geocon has prepared geotechnical investigations, testing and observation and special inspection for more than 90 sites for Borrego Solar throughout California. Most of the site are existing schools but have also included community centers, libraries, airports, maintenance yards, city halls, amusement parks and day cares. While Borrego Solar is one of our larger solar energy clients, we have also an additional 200 site for other solar firms including Solar Monkey, Reno Contracting, Solar City, Sun Edison, Martifer Solar, Solar Tech, Solar World America, First Solar, Westhaven Solar, OpTerra Energy, American Energy, SPG Solar, Onyx Renewable, NextEra Energy and Stellar Energy.
The County of San Bernardino is the largest county in the United States by area (20,000 square miles) and the 14thmost populous (2,200,000). The County has 6 national protected areas and 35 wilderness area. Geocon has had an on-call contract with the county to provide geotechnical and environmental services for public infrastructure such as sheriff stations, libraries, parks, schools, roadways, medical clinics, community centers and municipal buildings since 2015.
A 2018 Association of Environmental & Engineering Geologists seminar titled Debris Flows: Understanding the Hazard, gave insight into the mechanisms of debris flows in burn areas. The intense heat from the fire reduces the infiltration of water into the soil in the upper 2 to 4 inches. This phenomenon coupled with the lack of vegetation and abundant small debris (ash and branches) increases the risk of a debris flow in burn areas. The increase in material can help boulder transport as well, leading to rockfall hazards where none previously existed. Geocon worked with the County of Riverside under an on-call contract to evaluate areas adjacent to development with respect to rockfall hazard. The final report identified areas along Clinton Keith Road and within the Calle Del Oso Oro neighborhood that require further study.
